US Supreme Court Upholds State Bans on Transgender Women in Women's Sports

The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that state laws restricting the eligibility of individuals to participate in women's sports based on biological sex are constitutional.

The decision concerns laws in West Virginia and Idaho banning transgender athletes from competing, with the Supreme Court determining that these laws do not violate the Constitution or federal law. Specifically, it clarified that discrimination based on sex under the federal law known as 'Title IX' is limited to 'biological sex.'

While this ruling does not impose a nationwide ban on transgender participation in women's sports, it opens the door for individual states to enact their own participation restriction laws. Former President Donald Trump called the ruling a 'big win' immediately after it was announced.
