POSCO Accelerates Production and Safety Innovation with AI Technology

POSCO Pohang Steelworks is accelerating its efforts in productivity, quality, and safety management by establishing an AI smart system with 'VibeCoding.' 'VibeCoding' is a technology that allows field employees to directly apply AI to solve practical problems without the barrier of complex coding, by interacting with artificial intelligence (AI) using natural language instead of writing intricate code.

By leveraging AI to build a system for early detection of quality defects, POSCO has successfully prevented products with signs of defects from entering subsequent processes, thereby reducing logistics losses and fundamentally blocking the outflow of substandard products. In the logistics sector, a program was developed to calculate optimal crane routes for efficiently managing the warehouse storage of coiled wire rod products, leading to an approximate 12.5% improvement in daily product shipment capacity.

To ensure safety, 200 AI CCTV cameras have been installed at 54 key locations within Pohang Steelworks. These cameras provide real-time detection of anomalies in crane operations, steel slab path deviations, and risks of collision at railway crossings, contributing to accident prevention. Based on these site-centric smart innovation cases, POSCO is also participating in initiatives to support the digital transformation of small and medium-sized enterprises and foster local youth talent in smart manufacturing technology, contributing to technology diffusion and workforce development.
