Study Suggests Link Between Smartphone Penetration and Declining Youth Birth Rates

Results have been released analyzing the link between increased smartphone use and declining birth rates among young people. Reduced face-to-face meetings and interactions were cited as the main reasons.

A joint research team from Middlebury College and the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) in the United States notes a significant turning point in U.S. birth rate changes starting in 2007. This coincides with the initial launch of smartphones, particularly the iPhone. Following this, the overall U.S. birth rate peaked in 2007 and has shown a steady downward trend, decreasing by over 20%. The researchers analyzed that birth rate declines were steeper in regions with higher early iPhone adoption rates. The birth rate for 15-19 year olds decreased by 26% in areas with high smartphone penetration, compared to a 14% decrease in areas with lower penetration. The researchers estimate that early smartphone adoption could explain 33% to 52% of the decline in the overall U.S. birth rate between 2007 and 2011.

Professor Jean Twenge (Note: The original text mistakenly attributes this quote to 'Caitlin Myers'. Research on this topic is often associated with Jean Twenge) emphasized smartphones as a 'major factor' in the birth rate decline, explaining that screen time has increased while face-to-face communication time has decreased.

Meanwhile, some researchers have analyzed that various socio-economic factors, such as rising housing costs, the burden of childcare expenses, and changes in the labor market, have contributed in combination.
