Artificial intelligence (AI) is enhancing efficiency and safety by controlling complex on-site operations for energy companies. These companies are focusing on developing systems that integrate AI as a core component to augment the capabilities of their experts. This demonstrates that AI technology can play a crucial role not only in consumer-facing services but also in industrial sectors where real facilities and stable operations are paramount.

Woodside Energy, an energy company, has concentrated on analyzing data and optimizing operations since the early stages of AI adoption. This long-term infrastructure investment and the establishment of data governance have laid the groundwork for Woodside Energy's transition to 'agentic AI' systems that support complex industrial workflows.

These AI systems are designed not to completely replace human operators in high-risk environments, but rather to supplement their expertise. As Vice President Meloni stated, "We are focused on helping people within the organization make better decisions, faster."

This approach reflects an evolution occurring across the industrial AI field. AI is moving beyond isolated experimental phases to become enterprise-wide systems based on standardized platforms, well-managed data, and repeatable deployment patterns.

Vice President Meloni argued that this transition requires rethinking not just the organization's technology stack, but also the very nature of work. He added, "We are considering how the work itself should be reimagined, rather than simply adding AI to existing processes."

A prime example is the 'Startup Advisor,' an AI copilot designed to assist with the complex startup procedures of liquefied natural gas (LNG) plants. This system illustrates how AI can play a pivotal role in enhancing the operational continuity and safety of industrial sites.
