PPP Boycotts Committees Amidst Presidential Office Golf Invitation

The People Power Party (PPP) is refusing to participate in National Assembly standing committees, leaving the Democratic Party effectively operating the legislature solo. The PPP has boycotted committee participation, citing a perceived lack of room for reform or improvement following the June 3 local elections. In response, the Democratic Party has declared the National Assembly will operate in a 'half-hearted' manner.

Lee Dong-hak, former Supreme Council member of the Democratic Party, characterized the PPP's boycott as akin to 'throwing a tantrum' and stated it lacks public support. He pointed out that the PPP shows no discernible will or passion to get work done.

However, Kim Young-woo, a former PPP lawmaker, countered by highlighting that the Democratic Party arbitrarily selected members for 11 standing committees and the National Assembly Speaker unilaterally sent committee member lists via fax. He also cited issues like Seo Young-kyo's appointment as Chair of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee, arguing that the difference in the legislative approval rate between committees chaired by ruling party members and those chaired by PPP members is not statistically significant. Some voices have questioned whether the public would want to see another controversy-ridden Legislation and Judiciary Committee chair, reminiscent of the past 'salmon drinking party' hearing.

Lee Dong-hak further claimed that committees chaired by ruling party members have a 29% meeting convening rate, compared to 15% for committees chaired by opposition members. He added that if the ruling party gives up its chairs, including that of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee, clarity on accountability will be necessary. The PPP is reportedly considering other avenues for normalizing the National Assembly instead of abandoning all committee chair positions. However, the issue of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee remains a core point of contention and is expected to be a major variable in future negotiations over the composition of the Assembly.

Amidst the ongoing political conflict, it has been revealed that the Presidential Office recently extended an invitation for a golf outing to political figures. It remains uncertain what political implications or steps this meeting will entail.
