Prosecutors Approve Urgent Arrest of Police Investigation Chief

Prosecutors have approved the arrest of a police officer accused of attempting to destroy evidence in a murder case investigated by his own team. On the 6th, the Gwangju District Prosecutors' Office accepted the police request for the urgent arrest of Senior Sergeant A, the investigation team leader at the Gwangju Gwangsan Police Station, who was investigating the 'Jang Yoon-ki Gwangju high school student murder case'.

Police, determining that there was suspicion of evidence destruction against Senior Sergeant A, first arrested him urgently and then, in accordance with regulations, requested ex post facto approval from the prosecution within 12 hours, which the prosecution granted.

The day after granting approval, on the 7th, the prosecutors secured a search warrant specifying the charges—separate from the police investigation targets—and conducted independent searches of the Gwangju Gwangsan Police Station and the investigation team in question at the time. Through the search and seizure, prosecutors have identified circumstances indicating that the involved officers leaked investigation information, such as details of the arrest warrant application for Jang Yoon-ki's father or passwords, and concealed key evidence including cable ties and a 'real doll'.
