8 Dead, 34 Missing in China Chongqing Landslide; Xi Jinping Orders All-Out Rescue Efforts
A massive landslide occurred in Fengshui County, Chongqing, China, around 9 a.m. yesterday. Huge boulders and mounds of earth swallowed the village below in an instant, burying some 10 homes.
The disaster has claimed eight lives so far, while 34 people remain missing. Ten survivors are currently receiving treatment in hospitals. Witnesses described a deafening roar as the landslide quickly engulfed homes and vehicles.
President Xi Jinping has instructed authorities to spare no effort in saving lives, while also ordering measures to prevent secondary collapses and to inspect high-risk areas for geological hazards across the country.
