FCC Blocks Foreign Products, Including Chinese Drones, from U.S. Market

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has added foreign-manufactured unmanned aircraft systems (drones) and key components to a 'Covered List' at the end of last year, completely blocking the import and sale of these products on national security grounds. The FCC specified that the measure follows a determination that the equipment poses a national security threat.

The listed equipment covers the entire spectrum of unmanned aircraft systems, including key components such as sensors, cameras, communication devices, motors, and batteries. Inclusion on this list makes it impossible to obtain FCC certification for wireless communication devices in the U.S., effectively barring market entry.

The measure is intended to restructure the U.S. drone market supply chain, which is currently centered on Chinese products, to focus on the U.S. and its allies. Rather than scrutinizing technical defects, the new regulation is expected to prioritize verifying the origin, ownership, and production location of the supply chain, thereby reducing reliance on foreign drones.
