EU AI Act Fully in Effect… 'Made by AI' Labels Now Mandatory

The world's first comprehensive artificial intelligence (AI) regulation officially went into effect in the European Union (EU) on the 2nd (local time). Existing AI systems must comply with regulations by December 2, with a ban on the use of specific AI systems, such as the creation of sensationalized deepfake videos, taking effect the same month.

Text or video generated by AI must be clearly labeled, and users must be informed in advance that they are interacting with an AI to prevent any confusion that they are communicating with a human. The AI Office will oversee enforcement, and companies found in violation of regulations will face fines of up to 7% of their global annual turnover or 35 million euros, whichever is higher.

European Commission Executive Vice-President Henna Virkkunen stated that the measure aims to reduce deception and manipulation and help citizens make informed decisions. She also noted that while AI is a beneficial technology, it can cause harm if not properly designed, pointing out that cutting-edge models can pose risks.
