Experts are issuing a stern warning about the consumption of added sugars, which can have a detrimental impact on heart health. Dr. Dimitri Yarano, an American cardiologist, highlighted sugar alongside saturated fat as a primary culprit in damaging the heart and urged a reduction in added sugar intake. Dr. Yarano pointed out that hidden added sugars in beverages, snacks, sauces, and some health foods can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Excessive consumption of added sugars can elevate inflammation in the body, leading to increased blood pressure and impaired cholesterol and blood sugar regulation.

A study from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health found that individuals who consumed one sugary drink daily had an approximately 18% higher risk of cardiovascular disease, a risk that persisted even among those who were physically active. Furthermore, those whose daily caloric intake consisted of 25% or more from added sugars faced more than double the risk of dying from cardiovascular disease compared to individuals who consumed less than 10% from added sugars.

Therefore, it is crucial to reduce intake from primary sources such as soft drinks and processed foods, and to manage added sugar consumption by checking food labels.
