A man in his 20s has been detained on charges of attempted parricide for repeatedly stabbing his mother in her 60s with a weapon on Ganghwa Island, Incheon, in an attempt to kill her. Incheon District Court Chief Judge for warrants Son Seung-beom issued the arrest warrant, citing the risk of flight, after conducting a warrant validity review (pre-arrest suspect interrogation) on the day.

Mr. A is accused of committing the crime at around 10 p.m. on the 11th at the Ganghwa-gun Naega-myeon home of his mother, Ms. B. Ms. B was injured in the face and neck and taken to a hospital, but her wounds were not deep, and she was discharged after treatment.

Immediately after the attack, Mr. A himself called 119, reporting that his mother was bleeding. Police who responded to the call arrested him at the scene on charges of being caught in the act.

Police investigation revealed that Mr. A suffers from a mental illness. It is known that police had also considered, in the event his arrest warrant was denied, proceeding with involuntary commitment procedures in consultation with his family. However, it has not yet been confirmed what mental illness Mr. A suffers from, his specific treatment history, or whether he was undergoing treatment at the time of the crime.

The motive for the crime has also not been disclosed. It is unknown whether there was conflict between mother and son before the attack, or whether the weapon was prepared in advance. Police plan to conduct further investigation into the exact motive and circumstances of the incident before referring Mr. A to prosecutors.
