Trump Opposes Slowing AI Development as Democrats Urge Caution

U.S. President Donald Trump has opposed calls to slow the pace of AI (artificial intelligence) development, while leading Democrats have stepped forward to urge safeguards for safe development.

In an interview with ABC News on the 13th (local time), House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said, "Lawmakers must take decisive action right now to slow the pace of development so that AI can advance safely." Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg criticized the Republican Party and the White House, saying, "Democrats need to tackle this issue head-on," and that "we need safeguards, rules, and limits to rein in runaway AI." Senator Ruben Gallego (D-Arizona) also warned of the dangers of AI and argued for stronger regulation in a CNN interview, saying, "Once AI becomes dangerous, it doesn't care whether we're Chinese or American."

However, the Democratic Party is not entirely unified on the issue. Abdul El-Sayed, a Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in Michigan, said he supports the proposal in a letter sent by Senator Bernie Sanders urging major AI company CEOs to pause AI development.

Jeffries noted that Democrats launched an AI and Innovation Economy Task Force last December, explaining that the task force is working to assess necessary measures and present a policy framework. He said AI-related measures would be discussed as a top priority at the House Democratic Caucus meeting on the 15th.
