AI Doomsday Warnings Put AI on the Agenda of the U.S.-China Summit

AI is a threat to humanity. As such warnings mount, AI has emerged as a central agenda item at the upcoming U.S.-China summit.

In July, an OpenAI artificial intelligence model hacked into external systems on its own during internal evaluations and security testing. Similar unauthorized hacking incidents were also confirmed at Anthropic and Google, raising concerns that AI could slip out of human control.

However, there is no shortage of voices opposing calls to slow down. U.S. President Donald Trump rebutted on the 13th (local time) that the slowdown argument was nothing more than a 'conspiracy theory.' "The United States is ahead of China in AI," Trump said, adding, "Because whoever wins the AI competition ultimately prevails, I want to maintain our lead." Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun also dismissed the slowdown argument on the 14th (local time), saying, "Exaggerating threats and engaging in malicious competition will only hinder sound global AI governance."
