Roh Moo-hyun Foundation rebuts Han Dong-hoon's claim that former President 'received money and gifts,' calling it an insult to the deceased
The Roh Moo-hyun Foundation issued a statement on the 6th, calling remarks by Rep. Han Dong-hoon suggesting that former President Roh Moo-hyun received money and gifts "an insult to the deceased" and urging him to stop immediately.
In a statement titled "Roh Moo-hyun again? There is decency and a line even in political strife," the foundation said it "expresses deep concern and regret over the situation in which Rep. Han is presenting suspicions that were never legally confirmed, related to the past prosecutors' investigation of former President Roh, as if they were established facts." The foundation rebutted Rep. Han's claims, saying that what the courts ultimately determined as fact was not at issue — the allegations stem only from statements or suspicions raised during the investigation process. According to the statement, asserting suspicions from the investigation stage as if they were established facts and exploiting them for political purposes is inappropriate.
The foundation described invoking the deceased based on unconfirmed allegations as "a cowardly political offensive." It explained that former President Roh never admitted during his lifetime to having prior knowledge of or involvement in the matters raised by the prosecution. Nevertheless, the foundation emphasized that, apart from the legal disputes, former President Roh "staked his entire life on bearing the weight of responsibility."
The foundation further characterized Rep. Han's assertion of everything the prosecution raised at the time as confirmed fact as "an insult to the deceased." It added, "There is decency and a line even in political strife," and "We hope the weight of responsibility that former President Roh sought to bear will be respected." The foundation urged that using the former president as a tool of political strife stop immediately.
Rep. Han previously claimed at a forum on revising the Criminal Procedure Act held at the National Assembly members' office building on the 1st that "former President Roh received a Piaget watch worth more than 300 million won from his or his family's sponsor, Park Yeon-cha," and that "he illegally received billions of won." The following day, the 2nd, Rep. Han also posted on his Facebook that the two watches and the billions of won in gifts were "facts."
