As sophisticated financial scams powered by AI surge, cybersecurity expert Morgan Wright advises that the best defense is not advanced detection software, but skepticism. According to Wright, while countries like China and Russia are deploying AI at the state level, ordinary Americans have become prime targets for cybercriminals seeking quick money by exploiting personal vulnerabilities.

Generative AI tools have eliminated language barriers and can produce convincing phishing messages. Hyper-realistic voice and video clones that replicate a family member's voice are now possible with just a few seconds of audio harvested from social media and other sources.

Deborah Del Mastro, who lives in California, fell victim to a fake kidnapping scheme using an AI-cloned version of her daughter's voice and wired more than $5,000. "It was my daughter's voice, and she was having a panic attack," she recalled on The CyberGuy Report podcast.
