Lee Jae-myung and Trump Administration Close to Agreement on US Base Relocation Deal
National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac said on the 30th that South Korea and the United States are in the final stages of concluding a comprehensive agreement on relocating the US military base in Gwangju. According to Wi, once the comprehensive pact is reached, a framework will be in place for the base's relocation, including other facilities.
He added, "There is no indication that the US will refuse the relocation or obstruct it through land grabs or facility dismantlement."
President Lee Jae-myung, at the third joint public-private review meeting on the 'Mega Project' held at the Blue House on the 29th of last month, directed the Defense Ministry to move up the target date for the temporary relocation of the Gwangju military airfield from mid-2028 to support the creation of a semiconductor cluster in the Honam region.
