NVIDIA Turns Its Back on Gamers as It Rides the AI Chip Boom

Speculation has spread through the market that NVIDIA's top-tier graphics card, the RTX 5090, has halted production. With observers interpreting that the company is pouring resources into its AI business over gamer-focused products, attention is turning to whether shortages in the gaming market will continue. NVIDIA has denied the halt, saying RTX 5090 shipments will continue. However, major manufacturers remain unable to place additional component orders.

The reason behind the halt rumors can be found in the profit structure. Redirecting the semiconductors used in the 5090 from general consumers to high-performance AI chips for enterprise clients generates far greater returns.

Beneath the AI boom lies enormous debt. AI cloud company CoreWeave, in which NVIDIA has invested, is a prime example. To expand its data centers, the company has piled on borrowings, with its debt swelling to $50 billion — tens of trillions of won.

While NVIDIA has said shipments will continue, manufacturers' component orders remain blocked, and the RTX 5090 remains hard to find on the market. Supply of gamer-focused products has yet to ease, and the AI boom sits atop CoreWeave's tens-of-trillions-of-won debt.
