Iran Strikes Qatar LNG Facility in Retaliation for Israeli Attack

QatarEnergy, the state-owned energy company of Qatar, declared force majeure on the 24th for some long-term Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) supply contracts with four countries, including South Korea, after its key energy production facilities were damaged by an Iranian airstrike. This measure has led to supply disruptions for South Korea, China, Italy, and Belgium, which receive LNG from Qatar.

Qatar's Ras Laffan LNG production hub suffered extensive damage from Iranian airstrikes on the 18th and 19th. Iran appears to have attacked Qatar's LNG production facilities in retaliation after its own energy infrastructure was bombed by the United States and Israel. Saad Al-Kaabi, CEO of QatarEnergy, stated in an interview on the 19th that 17% of its LNG export capacity was damaged by the strikes.

South Korea's Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy has established an emergency response plan to prepare for a suspension of LNG imports from Qatar. A government official explained that sufficient volumes are secured for use until the end of the year. Currently, Qatari LNG accounts for about 15% of South Korea's total LNG imports. This proportion is projected to decrease to around 8% by the end of this year when a long-term contract for 2.1 million tons of Qatari LNG expires.
