Drones and Satellites Are Reshaping Modern Warfare

U.S. geopolitical analysis institutions have concluded that modern warfare is rapidly reorganizing around precision strikes based on drone and satellite intelligence. Geopolitical Futures, an American geopolitical analysis firm, analyzed that the Ukraine war served as a catalyst, transforming drones from mere support assets into 'autonomous guided bombs.' With real-time satellite intelligence, drones have become crucial weapons for accurately tracking and striking targets. Founder George Friedman stated that these changes are not simply technological advancements but are fundamentally altering the very core concepts of warfare. He emphasized that the combination of intelligence and space-based surveillance systems is completely shifting the criteria that determine victory or defeat in war. George Friedman pointed out that large-scale infantry and artillery-centric forces are vulnerable to precision-guided drones and satellite intelligence-based attacks.

This warfare dynamic is repeating in the Iran conflict, where precision strikes using long-range drones and missiles have emerged as realistic options. Friedman stressed that the essence of war is information, and that information is ultimately decided in space. He predicted that drone operations require the integration of real-time surveillance from low-Earth orbit satellites and positioning data from medium-Earth orbit satellites, and that destroying satellites or disrupting data transmission will become new key strategies in warfare. The wars in Ukraine and Iran are analyzed as testing grounds for space-based capabilities. In future conflicts, space dominance could become the critical factor determining the operations of air and ground forces.

The proliferation of drone and satellite-centric warfare raises the possibility of a restructuring of the international security framework.
