Cha Eun-woo Admits Tax Evasion Allegations, Completes Tax Payment
Actor Cha Eun-woo has announced that he has admitted wrongdoing regarding the tax evasion allegations that arose and has completed all related tax payments. This comes approximately three months after the controversy was raised. Previously, the Seoul Regional National Tax Service's Investigation Division 4 determined that Cha Eun-woo had evaded income tax by utilizing a one-person agency corporation under his mother's name, and notified him of approximately 20 billion KRW (approx. $14.5 million USD) in back taxes, including income tax.
Cha Eun-woo also directly explained the circumstances surrounding the establishment of the corporation. He said, "I established the corporation during a period of various changes and disruptions in my activities as part of preparations to ensure stable career continuation, but looking back now, there were aspects I did not sufficiently examine during that process." He added, "The responsibility for this lies with me, not my family or company," clarifying the accountability, and stated, "I will not evade this by claiming ignorance or attributing decisions to others, for any reason."
Cha Eun-woo also addressed the connection between his military enlistment timing and the notification of the tax audit results. He explained, "Although I am currently serving in the military, this was by no means a deliberate choice to avoid the controversy. My military enlistment could no longer be postponed last year, so I enlisted without completing the tax audit procedures." Cha Eun-woo enlisted in July of last year and is currently serving in the military band.
Cha Eun-woo stated, "I will diligently participate in the subsequent tax-related procedures," and added, "I will humbly accept the final judgment from the relevant authorities and fulfill my responsibilities accordingly."
