Former professional baseball player Oh Jae-won has been sentenced to 1 year and 9 months in prison in his appeal for charges of violating the Narcotics Control Act, a heavier sentence than in the first trial. This is the result of his charges being recognized as more severe in the retrial after he appealed the first-instance verdict.

The appellate court cited reasons for sentencing including Oh Jae-won's arrangement for his juniors to receive proxy prescriptions, and the quantity and duration of drug possession. Oh Jae-won is accused of obtaining and receiving 2,365 doses of medical narcotics over 86 instances from May 2021 to March 2024, through 14 individuals including current and former baseball players.

Prosecutors determined that Oh Jae-won used his position as a senior in the baseball community to demand proxy prescriptions for sleeping pills from his juniors, and that he used profanity and threats in the process.
