Gilgo Beach Serial Killer Offers Cooperation to FBI

The defendant in the Gilgo Beach serial murder case, Rex Heuermann, has pleaded guilty to seven murder charges in court and agreed to undergo a psychological assessment by the FBI. This decision is focused on uncovering the truth of the case.

Rex Heuermann received three life sentences without parole for the murder of eight women in cases that began in 1993.

This assessment by the FBI's Behavioral Science Unit will be conducted in the format of clinical interviews aimed at gaining academic and scientific insight into Rex Heuermann's motives and background. The Suffolk County District Attorney's office stated that these interviews are not for investigative purposes and are limited to the charges he has been indicted for, focusing on acquiring knowledge necessary for solving future cases. The FBI's Behavioral Science Unit specializes in studying the psychological characteristics of offenders. Dr. Burgess analyzed that the unit showed interest in the Heuermann case due to specific aspects of his crimes. This department has historically analyzed cases to identify patterns in serial offenses, and it was noted that Heuermann's case, possessing characteristics of sexual homicide, has been subject to data collection from an early stage. Heuermann will be obligated to provide truthful, accurate, and complete information to the unit.
