Seosan and Taean Set to Become Hydrogen Transport Hubs, Igniting Energy Transition
Seosan City and Taean County in Chungnam Province have been selected for the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's 'Hydrogen Transport Complex Base Construction Competition,' securing 8.55 billion KRW in national funding. This provides the foundation for the region, historically centered on thermal power generation and petrochemical industries, to transform into a key hub for future energy transport, capable of hydrogen vehicle charging, production, and storage.
The hydrogen transport complex base to be built will serve as an energy hub equipped with ancillary facilities such as large-capacity charging and storage, parking, and production facilities, going beyond a simple hydrogen refueling station.
Two high-pressure gas hydrogen refueling stations will be established in Daejuk-ri, Daesan-eup, Seosan City, and Sakseon-ri, Taean-eup, Taean County. With a total project cost of 12.5 billion KRW, construction is slated to begin in 2027 and completion is targeted for 2028.
Seosan City plans to pursue an 'industrial complex-type model,' leveraging the geographical advantages of the Daesan Industrial Complex, one of the nation's three major by-product hydrogen production bases. Taean County aims to build a seamless supply chain from production to consumption by integrating with a carbon capture-based hydrogen production facility.
Through this project, Chungnam Province aims to accelerate the transition to zero-emission vehicles, focusing on commercial vehicles such as hydrogen buses and trucks. Strengthening the hydrogen base will contribute to fostering alternative industries that support the regional economy and achieving carbon neutrality.
