American YouTuber Johnny Somali, who faced significant public backlash for posting videos insulting South Korea's 'Statue of Peace', was sentenced to 6 months in prison and 20 days detention in his first trial and immediately taken into custody in court. Seoul Western District Court's Criminal Division 1, Chief Judge Park Ji-won, on the 15th, sentenced Somali, who was indicted on charges including obstruction of business and distributing fabricated videos under the Special Act on the Punishment of Sexual Crimes, to 6 months in prison and 20 days detention.

The court also imposed a 5-year employment restriction on Somali, prohibiting him from working at institutions related to children, adolescents, and the disabled.

Somali is accused of intentionally causing a disturbance at a convenience store in Mapo-gu, Seoul, on October 17, 2024, obstructing business, and broadcasting lewd videos online that featured synthesized faces of men and women. The YouTube live broadcast at the time reportedly included scenes of him cursing at convenience store staff.

Somali is also alleged to have engaged in inappropriate behavior during the YouTube live broadcast, including kissing the 'Statue of Peace' and sexually harassing passersby.

During the court proceedings, Somali displayed a lax attitude, arriving an hour late to his trial and answering questions with his hands in his pockets.
