NEAR Protocol Jumps 126% in a Year to Top Cryptocurrency Returns

NEAR Protocol (NEAR) surged 126.4% over the past year, ranking first in returns among major cryptocurrencies. According to data compiled as of October 16, 2026, its price more than doubled from $2.30 to $5.21, with its market capitalization reaching $7 billion. In stark contrast, Bitcoin fell 25.8% over the same period, placing sixth.

Altcoin Leaders Diverged in Direction

Four of the top five performers posted gains. Second-ranked Monero (XMR) rose 90.9% from $298.27 to $569.53, and its $10.3 billion market cap surpasses NEAR Protocol's. A notable feature of this ranking is that demand for the privacy coin remained strong despite mounting regulatory pressure. Third-ranked Injective (INJ) gained just 8.4%, edging up from $8.49 to $9.20, while fourth-ranked TRON (TRX) posted a modest 6.2% rise from $0.3146 to $0.3342. TRON's market cap of $31.6 billion is the largest among the top performers, and its ability to stay in positive territory despite its size suggests continued demand for payments and stablecoin transfers.

Fifth-ranked Internet Computer (ICP) slipped 2.0% from $3.13 to $3.07, effectively treading water. The fact that the return gap among the top five spans 126 percentage points shows that market capital flowed selectively into specific sectors.

Bitcoin Down 25.8%: What a Sweeping Bottom Tier Means

Every asset from sixth to tenth place was in the red. Bitcoin fell 25.8% from $110,808 to $82,192, and despite maintaining a $1.65 trillion market cap, it landed in the middle-lower ranks by returns. Unlike the typical pattern where weakness in large-cap assets drags down individual coins, this past year was a period when assets with distinct individual narratives, such as NEAR Protocol and Monero, broke through the market's decline.

The declines in the lower tier followed a similar pattern. Chainlink (LINK) fell 26.9% from $17.21 to $12.59, and Filecoin (FIL) dropped 27.2% from $1.56 to $1.14. AAVE tumbled 31.5% from $234.41 to $160.66 — the fact that a flagship decentralized finance (DeFi) asset lost more than 30% confirms a broad capital outflow from the sector. Last-place Algorand (ALGO) fell 34.2% from $0.1819 to $0.1197, putting the gap with the top performer at more than 160 percentage points.

Investment Implications and Outlook

The lesson from this ranking is clear: market cap rankings and return rankings do not align. Bitcoin is overwhelmingly dominant in size but sat in the lower tier on one-year returns, while NEAR Protocol, at just $7 billion, delivered the best performance. That said, high returns from smaller assets come with equally high volatility risk. Whether NEAR Protocol extends its gains beyond the $5.21 level or gives back its year-long advance will likely be determined by network usage and ecosystem growth going forward.

If Bitcoin solidifies a bottom around the $82,192 level, lower-tier altcoins could gain rebound momentum. Conversely, if the correction in large-cap assets drags on, even the differentiated performances of top-ranked assets will face continued testing. Ultimately, the past year was a period when stock selection mattered more than market timing, and whether the gap between the four gainers and the five losers narrows will be a key point to watch next quarter.
