Daejeon Correctional Center Introduces Remote Video Consultations
The Ministry of Justice's Daejeon Correctional Center has established a system in cooperation with Eumseong Somang Hospital, allowing residents to receive mental health consultations via video without having to travel to the hospital. This initiative will make it easier for them to access expert medical help. On April 15, 2026, the Daejeon Correctional Center signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Eumseong Somang Hospital to accelerate the development of a video remote consultation system, aiming to strengthen the mental health protection framework for residents and improve access to medical services. This agreement was pursued to overcome security concerns and mobility restrictions that arise when residents requiring urgent psychiatric medication and counseling visit external hospitals.
Under the agreement, the Daejeon Correctional Center will install dedicated network equipment with enhanced security measures and prepare a separate, isolated consultation space. Eumseong Somang Hospital will assign specialized medical personnel with extensive clinical experience to exclusively monitor residents' conditions, conduct consultations, and issue prescriptions through the video system.
The introduction of this remote consultation service will enable residents to receive timely, professional treatment regardless of location. This system moves beyond the previous method of intermittent in-person visits, facilitating the provision of continuous and specialized care.
