Police in Austria have launched an investigation after a rat poison ingredient was detected in German-made HiPP baby food. The incident, which directly impacts consumer safety, occurred in the 'Carrot and Potato' 190g product from HiPP, known for its premium organic baby food.

Austrian police in the southeastern state of Burgenland confirmed the presence of the rat poison ingredient after analyzing samples of the product, following a report from a citizen. Around the same time, toxic substances were also confirmed in baby food products seized in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Police suspect that someone attempted to extort the manufacturer by introducing the rat poison ingredient into the baby food jars. Bromadiolone, which interferes with blood clotting, is the main active ingredient in rat poison.

HiPP has announced a recall of the affected product and stated that there are no issues with its production processes. Authorities have advised parents to seek immediate medical attention if infants who have consumed the baby food show symptoms of severe weakness, bleeding, or pale complexion. No actual cases of harm resulting from consumption of the ingredient have been officially reported. Police are continuing their investigation to determine the circumstances and motive behind the incident.
