Jinju Mayor, Others File for Injunction to Run as Independents
With about 40 days left until the June local elections, conflicts among heads of basic local governments in the Gyeongnam region are coming to the surface.
Including Jinju Mayor Cho Gyu-il, these individuals have declared their intention to run as independents, protesting the results of the People Power Party's nomination process and filing injunction requests with the court.
Jinju Mayor Cho Gyu-il declared his candidacy as an independent 'citizen's candidate' on the 22nd after his request for a retrial regarding his unfair exclusion from the primaries was denied. In response, the Gyeongnam provincial chapter of the People Power Party expelled Mayor Cho and banned him from rejoining the party for five years.
