Meta Pursues AI Chip Acquisition, Accelerates Infrastructure Expansion

Meta is accelerating its efforts to secure AI chips, with the multi-billion dollar CPU procurement deal with Amazon being a move aligned with the full-scale launch of agent-based AI competition. US business publication CNBC reported that this deal positions Meta among AWS's top five Graviton customers, with a contract duration of at least three years. Nafea Bshara, AWS Vice President, told Reuters that the contract value reaches billions of dollars.

While GPUs are crucial for training and running AI models, Meta views CPUs as essential for distributing tasks and commanding/controlling numerous agents. Consequently, in addition to Graviton CPUs, Meta is sourcing or leasing chips from Nvidia (including GPUs and 'Grace' CPUs), AMD, and Google. It is also diversifying its AI infrastructure ecosystem by deploying its own developed 'Meta Training and Inference Accelerator' (MTIA).

Concurrently, Meta is undertaking a restructuring initiative, laying off 8,000 employees—representing 10% of its total workforce—and eliminating 6,000 planned job openings as part of organizational changes driven by AI advancements.
