Senate Rejects Resolution to Limit Trump's Military Action on Cuba
Democrats' attempt in the U.S. Senate to limit President Donald Trump's military actions in Cuba was defeated by Republican opposition.
The resolution, proposed by Senator Tim Kaine, stipulated that the withdrawal of U.S. troops near Cuba and a blockade of Cuba would be considered U.S. hostilities requiring congressional approval.
Tensions in the region had previously escalated after President Trump hinted at the possibility of military action against Cuba.
Republican Senator Rick Scott blocked a full vote on the resolution, thwarting Democrats' efforts to restrict military operations. The rejection of the Cuba resolution frustrates Democratic attempts to limit the U.S. president's war powers.
