Democratic Party to Pursue Special Prosecutor Bill Over 'Prosecutorial Indictment Allegations,' Reviews Prosecution Rights
The Democratic Party is preparing to introduce a special prosecutor bill concerning alleged irregularities in the investigative and prosecutorial processes under the Yoon Suk-yeol administration, and is reportedly reviewing granting the special prosecutor the authority to maintain prosecution in ongoing trials.
The National Assembly's Special Committee for Investigating the Truth Regarding Allegations of Manipulated Indictments by Political Prosecutors under the Yoon Suk-yeol Administration (Special Committee) is set to conclude its activities on April 30, and the Democratic Party aims to transition the outcomes of the parliamentary inquiry into the establishment of a special prosecutor.
The draft special prosecutor bill is said to include provisions granting the special prosecutor the authority to maintain prosecution in trials. However, regarding the possibility of granting the 'right to withdraw indictment,' a cautious stance was taken. Rep. Jeon Yong-gi of the Democratic Party, a member of the Special Committee, stated on MBC's 'Eye on the Issue' on April 30 that it would be difficult to directly grant the special prosecutor the right to withdraw indictments, adding that this aspect is not under consideration.
