Key Election Matchups Set for June 3 Local Elections in Southern Gyeonggi
With the June 3 local elections on the horizon, the key electoral matchups for five cities in southern Gyeonggi Province and the by-election for the Pyeongtaek-Eul National Assembly seat have been finalized.
In the Pyeongtaek mayoral race, Cha Hwa-yeol of the People Power Party and Choi Won-yong of the Democratic Party of Korea are competing, presenting policy proposals focused on semiconductor industry expansion, strengthening Pyeongtaek Port's competitiveness, and building metropolitan transportation networks. For the Anseong mayoral election, Kim Jang-yeon of the People Power Party faces incumbent Mayor Kim Bo-ra of the Democratic Party of Korea, with key issues including maintaining the agricultural and livestock base, expanding living infrastructure, and balanced regional development. Anseong City Hall recently experienced searches related to two departments. In Hwaseong Special City, incumbent Mayor Jung Myung-geun of the Democratic Party of Korea is seeking re-election against Park Tae-gyeong of the People Power Party. Major campaign pledges include improving transportation in the Dongtan area, attracting businesses and expanding industry, and advancing special city administration. In Yongin, incumbent Mayor Lee Sang-il of the People Power Party is set against Hyun Geun-taek of the Democratic Party of Korea, with core issues revolving around the pace of the semiconductor cluster initiative and policy shifts compared to the current administration's performance. In Osan, incumbent Mayor Lee Gwon-jae of the People Power Party is competing with Cho Yong-ho of the Democratic Party of Korea, with policy debates expected over expanding industrial complexes and citizen-focused administration.
The Pyeongtaek-Eul parliamentary by-election has drawn a large number of candidates, including former National Assembly members and party leaders, forming a multi-candidate contest. Key competitors include Kim Yong-nam of the Democratic Party of Korea and Yoo Eui-dong of the People Power Party, with Kim Yong-nam advocating for pragmatic policies and Yoo Eui-dong emphasizing his three-term political foundation in the region.
