Police Close 9-Month Investigation into Foreigner's Crime Committed Abroad
Police have closed a defamation case against Professor Mark Tan of Liberty University in the U.S., after a 9-month investigation, determining it falls under the category of 'crimes committed abroad by foreign nationals.'
The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's Cyber Investigation Unit announced on March 9 that they had dismissed the case against Professor Tan, who was accused of defamation by spreading false information, citing 'no grounds for prosecution' and deciding not to forward the case.
Dismissal is a ruling to close a case without a substantive investigation when it is difficult to establish the elements of a crime or when there is insufficient practical benefit to continuing the investigation.
