People Power Party's Gyeongbuk Nominations: Mixed Results of System vs. Strategic Selections
The People Power Party's Gyeongbuk Provincial Chapter has announced its nomination results for local and provincial council members. The outcomes have been mixed, with divisions between 'system-based' nominations, which prioritize primaries, and 'strategic' nominations that incorporated the opinions of local parliamentary members.
In Pohang's Buk-gu and Nam-gu/Ulleung-gun districts, Gyeongsan, and Gumi, all candidates for provincial and local council seats were nominated without primaries, receiving sole nominations. In these areas, incumbent lawmakers faced criticism of 'self-serving nominations' as they were excluded without even the opportunity for a primary. In Pohang, where unilateral sole nominations were pushed through, excluded incumbent lawmakers have declared their intention to run as independents, which is expected to become a variable in the election landscape. Indeed, moves by excluded incumbents to run as independents have emerged in areas like Pohang.
Conversely, in Gyeongju, primaries were held for all 10 local council constituencies. In Goryeong, Seongju, and Chilgok, primaries were conducted for all 6 analyzed constituencies, securing procedural legitimacy.
Whether the 'seeding of one's own people' for the general elections will translate into competitiveness in the main elections will be determined by the results of public sentiment in Gyeongbuk.
