Former President Obama Criticizes DOJ Politicization; Governor DeSantis Retorts

Former U.S. President Barack Obama's criticism that the Department of Justice (DOJ) is being used for the benefit of specific politicians or administrations has drawn a counterattack from Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

In a CBS interview, Obama argued that the attorney general should be 'the people's lawyer and not the president's consigliere,' stressing that he could not tolerate situations where government power is used to suppress political opponents or grant favors to allies. He asserted that the attorney general must be prevented from prosecuting individuals based on the president's will, which he deemed essential for national security. He added that independent judgment on specific cases or prosecutions must be restored. Obama also mentioned in the interview that there were norms during his presidency that he adhered to, though not legally mandated.

During the Obama administration, in 2016, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) initiated an counterintelligence investigation to examine alleged links and collusion between Trump campaign officials and Russian individuals. The investigation led to the appointment of Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who concluded that while links between the Trump campaign and the Russian government were found, collusion or cooperation in election interference activities could not be proven.

In January 2017, the Director of National Intelligence indicated that Obama and other senior intelligence officials politically misused information related to Russian interference during the 2016 presidential election. The Director of National Intelligence criticized former President Obama for ordering an intelligence assessment in January 2017, which he claimed effectively acted as a years-long 'coup' against the elected president. He asserted that this assessment was an attempt to undermine the will of the American people and weaken President Donald Trump's legitimacy.
