Local Elections: Ruling and Opposition Party Matchups Finalized; Democratic Party Rallies for Broader Influence

Ahead of the June 3 local elections, the Democratic Party is employing a strategy of broadening its nationwide campaign scope by advocating for 'state stability,' while the People Power Party is focusing its initial strategy on incumbent metropolitan mayors defending their seats. With the matchups for most metropolitan mayoral races finalized, the parties have officially entered the election campaign period for the June 3 local elections, the first nationwide polls since the launch of the Lee Jae-myung administration.

The Democratic Party aims to translate the momentum of the first-year administration into expanding its political power at the local level. The party is targeting Seoul, the 수도권 (capital region), Chungcheong, and parts of Yeongnam as key areas for this election. Specifically, in Seoul, candidate Jung Won-oh is facing off against Oh Se-hoon of the People Power Party. For the Gyeonggi governor race, Choo Mi-ae of the Democratic Party is competing against Yang Hyang-ja of the People Power Party. In the Incheon mayoral election, Park Chan-dae of the Democratic Party will face Yoo Jeong-bok of the People Power Party, with both parties dedicating efforts to expand their influence in these key races. The Democratic Party is also strategizing to broaden its reach into traditionally conservative strongholds by fielding candidates such as Jeon Jae-soo for Busan mayor, Kim Bu-gyeom for Daegu mayor, and Kim Gyeong-su for Gyeongnam governor.

In contrast, the People Power Party is concentrating on defending its existing positions, leveraging the incumbent mayors in numerous metropolitan areas secured in the 2022 local elections, including Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Incheon, Daejeon, Ulsan, Sejong, Gangwon, Chungbuk, Chungnam, Gyeongbuk, and Gyeongnam. In these regions, the People Power Party is emphasizing the 'incumbent premium' and the continuity of local administration, while also highlighting a narrative of checks and balances against the central government and ruling party.
