AOC Criticizes Billionaire Wealth as 'Exploitation' and 'Myth'
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC), a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, argued that the immense wealth of billionaires is based on 'exploitation' and 'myth,' rather than being the result of legitimate labor. Appearing on a podcast, AOC explained that billionaires' fortunes are accumulated not from individual merit or achievements, but as a consequence of policy failures such as corporate abuse of power and paying workers low wages.
Ocasio-Cortez mentioned that her socioeconomic perspective is rooted in her experience growing up in a working-class Puerto Rican family in New York. She drew a contrast between the 'myth' peddled by large corporations and her own experiences, citing her past work as a bartender and waitress.
She pointed out the reality in American society where economic insecurity is attributed to individual failure, leading workers to blame themselves for being poor because they aren't trying hard enough. This, she stated, is an attempt to legitimize low wages and inequality.
Ocasio-Cortez added that it is no coincidence that xenophobia and anti-immigrant sentiment are spreading concurrently with extreme income inequality, criticizing the phenomenon of economic anxiety being displaced onto vulnerable social groups.
She recalled that her father died during the 2008 economic crisis and that her family, despite doing everything right, almost went bankrupt due to the system. Through this, she emphasized that even with hard work, individuals can be ruined by unforeseen external factors, highlighting the lack of a sufficient social safety net for such situations.
