Million Dollar Campaign Launched to Halt Business Exodus

New York City business owners have launched a $1 million campaign to hold onto companies struggling and leaving the city. This campaign is part of an effort to revitalize the local economy and preserve jobs.

The business exodus movement has recently flared up after Mayor Adams (Mamdani) named Citadel LLC CEO Ken Griffin in a new tax advertisement targeting second homes. Griffin criticized Mayor Adams as 'bizarre,' and Citadel's COO notified employees that the company might not proceed with remodeling plans for its $6 billion new office building under construction in Midtown Manhattan.

New York City's political and financial leaders have begun efforts to prevent a business exodus in response to Mayor Adams's policies. Andrew Murstein, founder of Medallion Financial, donated $1 million to launch 'Operation Boomerang,' aimed at bringing departing companies back to New York. He anticipates raising a total of $20 million to $30 million through this campaign. Former NYC Mayor Eric Adams posted on X in support of CEO Ken Griffin, urging him to 'stand firm.'

Critics point out that Mayor Adams's push for policies targeting the wealthy is creating anxiety among local businesses. News has emerged that many businesses are considering leaving, indicating the mayor's difficult position in achieving both fiscal security and rallying support. Concerns have been raised that New York City could become a welfare state reliant on taxes from a small number of high-income earners, and that their departure could destabilize the city's financial structure. This movement highlights the resurfacing concerns about tax policies targeting the ultra-rich and public safety issues, which were also raised when CEO Ken Griffin moved his businesses from Chicago to New York.
