The Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) has officially urged candidates to prepare pledges aimed at improving the working environment for care workers ahead of the local elections on June 3rd. The KCTU believes that improvements in the care and welfare sector can serve as a significant solution for society facing issues of low birth rates and an aging population.

KCTU spokesperson Jeon Ho-il pointed out that care workers are currently working under conditions of low wages, unstable employment, heavy work burdens, and low social regard.

The KCTU also separately emphasized the role of local governments. Spokesperson Jeon stated, "While the central government's role in the transition to a care-based nation will proceed through labor-industry negotiations, local governments must also respond." Based on this, the KCTU has demanded that candidates in the upcoming local elections pursue five core agendas as policy initiatives.
