Lee Jun-seok likens Han Dong-hoon's reporter incident to 'Biden-Nallimyeon' controversy
Lee Jun-seok, leader of the Reform Party, criticized Han Dong-hoon, an independent candidate for Busan Buk-gap, by comparing his explanation for not noticing a fallen camera reporter during a press conference to the past controversy over the 'Biden-Nallimyeon' broadcast. Appearing on YTN Radio, Lee pointed out that Han's explanation differed from the facts and stated that the incident was similar to the 'Nallimyeon' explanation given at the time.
The incident occurred during a press conference for Han's candidacy near Gupo Market in Buk District, Busan, on the 9th. Publicly available footage shows a camera reporter from a broadcasting station falling off the stage, with Kim Yoon-hyung, spokesperson for Han's campaign, also falling in the process. Immediately after falling, Han was seen looking in the opposite direction and waving. He was later captured turning his head towards where the reporter fell and looking for about 4 seconds.
Consequently, online criticism emerged, accusing Han of being indifferent even after noticing the accident. On the 10th, immediately after the incident, Han's side explained, "Candidate Han did not recognize the reporter falling, which is clearly visible in the video." They added, "Immediately after the situation occurred, we confirmed the situation with the moderator and received the answer 'It's okay' before continuing the press conference."
On the 12th, Kwon Young-se, a lawmaker from the People Power Party, pointed out, "Looking at the video, there is no way Han did not know about the accident." Kwon criticized Han's 'I didn't see it' explanation as dishonest.
This incident is analyzed as a case study demonstrating how politicians' communication styles and crisis management abilities are perceived by voters. It once again confirmed how sensitive every word and action of politicians can be amidst rapidly spreading videos and online public opinion.
