Charging Technology Radically Transformed in a Decade

What was once a simple tool for connecting to power has evolved into a key technology that makes life more convenient. Just 10 years ago, tangled cables, slow speeds, and frequent overheating were considered normal inconveniences, but today's charging technology has reached an entirely different level.

The most fundamental change is the shift in semiconductor materials. Gallium Nitride (GaN), which has replaced traditional silicon semiconductors, can handle higher voltages, switches faster, and offers superior conduction efficiency. These characteristics allow for the same output to be achieved in a smaller volume. Coupled with USB-C standardization, an environment where a single multi-port charger can power smartphones, tablets, and wearable devices simultaneously has naturally become the norm.

Anker Innovations has launched GaNPrime 2.0 based on this foundation. This structure combines GaN material with a high-frequency controller and a multi-level buck converter, subdividing the voltage conversion process from the traditional binary (on/off) pattern into multiple smaller transitions. According to Mario U, Head of North America at Anker Innovations, this structure has achieved a secondary power conversion efficiency exceeding 99.5%, with some products maintaining a 140W output from a single port without dropping below optimal levels.

The practical value of the technology is confirmed by numbers. Mario U stated, "In the past, charging three devices would have required three separate chargers totaling 210W. However, the Anker Prime 160W charger, through PowerIQ 5.0, dynamically redistributes unused power to charge three devices in a similar timeframe." This shift from fixed allocation to dynamic allocation has reduced power waste and boosted charging speeds.

According to IoT Analytics, approximately 20 billion IoT devices are currently connected worldwide. This scale dramatically increases the complexity of charging demand while simultaneously assigning a new role to the charger industry. Mario U remarked, "Charging products are undergoing a fundamental identity transformation from accessories to primary components. Chargers are no longer mere add-ons to devices but are the foundational infrastructure for all digital experiences."
