AI Video Scams in Online Resale Under Police Probe

Police have launched an investigation into used goods fraud cases that utilize manipulated videos created with generative AI. A victim was defrauded of 11 million won after being deceived by a video showing a motorcycle for sale on a truck, only to lose contact with the seller. Other victims have come forward after realizing they were scammed after seeing similar videos on social media.

An analysis commissioned by KBS confirmed that all the motorcycle sale videos received by the victims were AI-generated and manipulated. Some videos showed errors when zooming in on phone numbers or text, or displayed typical AI-generated video movements. One victim stated, "It even had the sound of footsteps, so I thought it was real," but upon zooming in, they belatedly realized it was fake, noticing differences in the alphabet on the truck's lettering.

As cases of fraud using AI-manipulated videos in used goods transactions continue to surface, police have initiated a full-scale investigation.
