Gwangju Buk-gu District Poised to Elect First Female Chief?
There are those watching to see if Gwangju region will elect its first female local government head in the June 3 local elections. Since the launch of popularly elected local autonomy in 1995, not a single female local government head has been produced in Gwangju over the past 31 years.
Ahead of the June 3 local elections, Shin Soo-jung of the Democratic Party, Kim Ju-up of the Progressive Party, independent Kim Sung-hyun, and independent Noh Nam-soo have registered for the Gwangju Buk-gu District chief election.
Among them, Candidate Shin stands out from previous cases, having previously served as the first female speaker of the Gwangju City Council.
