ActBlue CEO Set to Testify Before Congress on June 10

Regina Wallace-Jones, CEO of the online political donation platform ActBlue, is scheduled to appear before a U.S. congressional hearing on June 10. The hearing is intended to ascertain whether ActBlue properly reported political donations received from foreign nationals to Congress, and specifically if any misrepresentations were made.

Rep. Bryan Steil, chairman of the House Administration Committee, alleges that the CEO provided factually inaccurate information to the committee since the beginning of the investigation. The CEO's upcoming testimony comes after allegations that ActBlue provided false information to Congress regarding its ability to block illegal foreign donations through its payment processing platform. ActBlue's internal legal counsel reportedly conveyed an internal legal memo to the CEO in 2023, warning of the possibility that the company had misstated facts to Congress regarding the vetting process for potentially illegal foreign contributions.

This has amplified concerns about the platform's fraud prevention standards, particularly after five current or former ActBlue employees invoked their Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination in closed-door depositions in April. The investigation is part of an in-depth inquiry by the House Administration Committee (chaired by Bryan Steil) into instances of failure to enforce mandatory credit card verification values (CVV) during payment processing. In a letter sent to CEO Wallace-Jones in April, Steil and other Republicans stated there were significant reasons to believe ActBlue may have intentionally withheld relevant materials to obstruct the investigation. They directed ActBlue to submit a large volume of documents related to the vetting of political donations from overseas.

CEO Wallace-Jones has denied misleading Congress, and ActBlue representatives have previously stated a similar position. ActBlue is a crucial platform for fundraising for Democratic candidates' campaigns.
