A teacher who was severely injured after being shot by a 6-year-old student is now seeing the school's former assistant principal stand trial for child neglect. The case has drawn criticism for the school's alleged failure to appropriately address the young student's warning signs of violence, amplifying concerns over safety in educational settings.

The former assistant principal of Richneck Elementary School, Ebony Parker, is on trial for 8 felony counts of child neglect, accused of ignoring repeated warnings that the student could be armed. Parker has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Teacher Abigail Zwerner testified that she had concerns about the student's behavior from that morning, feeling he was "acting strange" and showing "violent inclinations." During lunchtime, Zwerner observed the student staring intently at her and a security guard in the cafeteria, an unusual behavior she pointed out. Zwerner also testified that during outdoor activity time, the student was wearing a loose jacket and remained stationary with his hands in his pockets.

Prosecutors questioned Zwerner on how many times she had communicated these concerns to school administrators, including Parker, prior to the incident. A significant portion of the trial focused on the information Zwerner shared with administration before the shooting. Zwerner stated that while she recognized the student was having problems and attempted to inform school administrators, Parker, who was the assistant principal at the time, did not respond appropriately.

The testimony centered on the exchange regarding whether Zwerner recognized the student's danger signs and attempted to report them, and to what extent the school administration was aware and acted upon them. Zwerner became emotional when recalling the events of that day towards the end of her testimony.
