Desert Wastelands Transform into New Industrial Hubs for Solar and Data Centers
Barren deserts, once difficult to develop, are transforming into hubs for the solar and data center industries by leveraging their vast land and abundant sunshine. By incorporating large-scale energy storage systems (ESS) to stockpile electricity, deserts are becoming new industrial strongholds capable of supplying uninterrupted power around the clock.
Amid this trend, cases have emerged where electricity generated at desert solar complexes is supplied directly to nearby data centers. Since data centers are power-hungry facilities where securing stable and affordable electricity is critical, pairing them with desert solar is being proposed as a viable solution.
China is at the forefront of realizing this model. A 500-megawatt (MW) solar power plant is currently in operation, designed to supply electricity generated in the desert directly to data centers.
This shift in deserts represents a new development model that converts the value of harsh environments into industrial value by combining them with new growth drivers: solar power and data infrastructure.
