Ahead of the North Chungcheong gubernatorial election, candidates from both ruling and opposition parties have engaged in a war of words, criticizing each other's campaign promises as a "waste of taxpayer money."

The election committee for the Democratic Party of Korea's North Chungcheong chapter issued a statement on May 25, taking issue with People Power Party candidate Kim Young-hwan's disparagement of the basic income policy for rural and fishing communities. The Democratic Party claimed Kim distorted finances invested by the local government for regional survival and balanced development as if they were personal debt.

Furthermore, the Democratic Party criticized Kim for his dual stance, defining the stadium construction pledge, which requires substantial funding, as an "investment in the future" while characterizing rural policies as a "burden on future generations."
