Im Mun-young, candidate for the Gwangsan, Gwangju constituency by-election of the Democratic Party of Korea, met with representatives from Microsoft (MS) on the 26th to discuss Gwangju's potential for artificial intelligence (AI) industry transformation and proposed Gwangju as a testbed for AI industry transition. During the meeting, Im explained his vision for a unified Gwangju-Jeonnam Special City, emphasizing its potential to become a hub for South Korea's AI industry transformation, rather than merely a provincial city.

He stressed the strategic necessity for Microsoft to invest in Gwangju, explaining that the proposed Special City could be endowed with Seoul-level authority, regulatory innovation, direct support from the central government, and function as a city for industrial transformation experiments.

Jason Curtis, Chief Financial Officer for Microsoft Korea, also met with Im to discuss AI industry cooperation, including attracting an MS research center and establishing data centers in Gwangju.
