Education Superintendent Candidates Engaged in Mud-Slinging Battle
The election for Superintendent of Education in Jeonnam and Gwangju is showing a murky trend with candidates exchanging revelations and filing accusations against each other.
Candidate Kim's camp revealed that the police had issued a no-charge disposition in February this year for a case filed by the Korean Teachers and Education Workers Union (KTUWU) against them. Candidate Kim's side claimed that Candidate Jang, affiliated with KTUWU, knowingly spread false information despite being aware of this fact.
In response, Candidate Jang's side raised suspicions about Candidate Kim, the incumbent Jeonnam Superintendent of Education, residing in a traditional Korean house (Hanok) owned by the spouse of a contractor with a history of supply bribery. They added that while the police had issued a no-charge disposition based on the fact that deposit and monthly rent were paid for the property, the case is currently under investigation by the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) due to the accuser's request for reinvestigation.
