YouTube to Automatically Identify AI-Generated Videos

YouTube is introducing a feature that automatically distinguishes and labels videos made by artificial intelligence (AI) from those that are actually filmed.

This measure is intended to help users clearly understand information and increase transparency for AI content amid a growing volume of such material.

For realistic videos or general videos with a high proportion of AI-generated content, the AI label will appear above the video description. For the short-form video service 'Shorts,' it will be displayed as an overlay on the video. Animation, non-realistic videos, and content with minor AI editing will require users to expand the description to see the AI label.

Content produced using YouTube's own AI tools, 'Veo' or 'Dream Screen,' or content where metadata C2PA indicates it is fully AI-generated, will receive a permanent AI label. C2PA is an industry-standard specification that digitally authenticates the source and creation history of content.

YouTube stated that the addition of an AI label does not affect the video recommendation algorithm or eligibility for monetization.

Amid the rise of AI-generated content that is difficult to distinguish from human creations, YouTube has joined the movement to enhance content transparency by establishing this labeling system.
